Walpole Island man charged in Wallaceburg fatal crash

On the 15th of September, 2012 at 4:50 a.m. the Chatham-Kent, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a single vehicle collision on 40 Highway at Dufferin Ave.

Investigation revealed that a Ford Mustang that was travelling southbound on 40 Highway failed to negotiate a stop sign at Dufferin Avenue. The vehicle collided with a guard rail and came to rest in a field. The driver and passenger were taken to hospital by ambulance; another passenger in the car suffered no injuries.

The passenger, Stephen Smith, a 21 year old Walpole Island man was pronounced deceased at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance – Sydenham Campus.

The driver, a 34 year old Walpole Island man is facing charges under the Criminal Code.
