Yesterday at 9:45 a.m. the Chatham-Kent, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on patrol of the 401 Highway westbound, near Communications Road.
An OPP officer observed the driver of a red Ford F150 pick up truck driving with a newspaper on the steering wheel. The driver was so distracted; he didn’t notice the police vehicle beside him for over a minute. The vehicle was stopped and further investigation revealed that he was completing a puzzle while driving.
A 54 year old St Thomas, Ontario man has been charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
Distracted driving kills! As a driver, it is your responsibility to direct your entire attention to driving safely.

Really, should this person be allowed to drive at all? He obviously has difficulty in making correct decisions.

Unbelievable? I have seen this happen on the 401. Not sure what people are thinking.

I’ve heard that crossword puzzles can be highly addictive. As such, the Ontario government needs to initiate a ‘crossword puzzle user registry’. This way they can be sure to know who’s at risk of becoming crossword puzzle abusers and recklessly putting the public at risk. AND… it would fit in nicely with the current ontario governments political platform/ideals.

Its not different than driving with a dog on your lap. Careless or drive while crowded would be appropriate charges

I heard if it had been a non-hand held puzzle things would have been fine! Invention opportunity, non-hand held puzzles for those who just can’t be forced to do one thing at a time! And agree, I love seeing people drive around with a loving pooch on their lap and nothing is done! But GOD forbid I hold my phone! I think we should ban everything, no more coffee as that must be a bigger distraction than a phone and unless they have a long straw, its hand held!
