It was the end of an era Saturday in Wallaceburg.
As it was anticipated after the May announcement, Sobey’s closed its doors at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Check out this story from the original announcement.
Corporate officials with Sobey’s said the closure was a difficult one to make, but the store was no longer viable to operate.
CKDP users had quite the discussion after this announcement as well, check out this story.
Sources say various options are being explored for the future use of the building.

I looked over the original article and saw the litany of negative comments that people had about the store closing, the mayor, and the current economic situation in C-K. The job losses are obviously unfortunate but as a community maybe we need to take this as a learning lesson and start supporting our local businesses.
Everyone loves the convenience of a one stop shop like Walmart (or Sobeys) and their arguably lower prices, but what about the quality of the product. In Wallaceburg we are fortunate to have local stores and food stands where we can buy fresh flowers, meat, baked goods, and produce.
These are the people I want to support because these are the people who support our community.

I shopped here regularily. More so than WalMart. I will miss it. Especially the meat counter.
I have to say though… I went through on Saturday, the final day… 40% off sale… there wasn’t much left… but I was embarrassed looking at the prices. From what I seen many of the prices were jacked WAY up. A can of peas for $1.99!!???? lol Canned tomatoes at $1.89ea??? Cereal normally at $4.99 was 7 bucks?? 40% off brought it back down to ‘normal’ price.

I agree with Tim, when I was there on Wed. I was looking at a coffee maker that was priced at $129.00 Minus the 40% off …I was speaking to a cashier there and she said that the machine was around $99 prior to the sale.

Thats our corporate world now . . . gouge, gouge, gouge….the oil conglomerates have taught other corporations well.
It becomes more apparent each day that the working class are only here to serve these large conglomerates and corporations as they get richer and richer and we the middle class begin sinking to the bottom – deep into the abyss.

OMG! it was robbing the people right through to the end of their time here, in a town that is already hurting? now that is why they didnt make it here,,, and i feel sorry for the cashiers who had to hold their heads up to that , knowing they couldnt do a thing about it,, and losing their jobs in a town that is hurting for employment! Sobeys , i never shopped there unless they had a good meat sale! i would rather buy meat fresh packaged, than the way you get it thru nofrills and walmart… and even their meat was highly priced too,,, may as well have shopped fosters meat market for counter freshness, from the butcher! it does not bother me that they are closed, maybe we will get a better business in there!
