A review on provincial government spending has been in the works for Ontario, and a report conducted by economist Don Drummond is expected to be released next week.
Reports say the doucumnent included more than 400 recommendations on how to drastically cut spending… supposedly many of the suggestions are expected to be controversial, and many are set to revolve around health care.
Shirley Roebuck, of the Chatham-Kent Health Coalition, says she expects some of the recommendations will revolve around closing small hospitals.
Roebuck added the group is ready to make their voices heard.
“We’re going to get very vocal,” she said. “We’re hoping that the public supports us and gets vocal with us. We have to tell Dalton McGuinty and (Health Minister) Deb Matthews and your MPPs that we will not stand for this non-democratic procedure that McGuinty is using.”
Roebuck said she isn’t impressed that no public consultation was done in preparation if the report by Drummond.
She added, people in Chatham-Kent and specifically Wallaceburg should be concerned about potential cuts being recommended in the report.
“Our mandate is to protect public health care and maintain the services we have,” Roebuck said. “Everyone in Chatham-Kent and especially Wallaceburg need to know that some very severe recommendations may be down the road.”
Premier McGuinty has said health care, whicn encompassed 40% of provincial spending, has multiple opportunities for reform.
