Sarnia Ontario - Chatham-Kent-Essex MP Dave Van Kesteren helped launch the Coast Guard's 50th anniversary year aboard CCGS Griffon and CCGS Samuel Risley at the Sarnia Government Dock, and at the Coast Guard's regional headquarters in Sarnia Thursday. Nearly 150 Coast Guard employees work in Sarnia, which is home base for the Coast Guard's Central and Arctic Region. MP Van Kesteren praised the men and women of the Coast Guard and invited all Canadians to celebrate this vital institution on its 50th anniversary. The Coast Guard provides a multitude of essential services for mariners, including search and rescue, environmental response, icebreaking, aids to navigation, marine communications, maritime security and waterways development.

An Honoured Past, a Committed Future
Ottawa – The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today issued the following statement:
“It is with great pride that I congratulate the Canadian Coast Guard on its 50th anniversary and I invite all Canadians to join me in celebrating this milestone.
“Although its heritage can be traced back to a time before Confederation, the current Canadian Coast Guard was created by the Diefenbaker Government on January 26, 1962. Since those early days of lifeboats and Arctic voyages, the organization now includes a workforce of roughly 4,500 dedicated employees and a fleet of 116 vessels and 22 helicopters.
“Whether it is to support Canada’s vital commercial fishing industry, maritime transportation, shipping, or the country’s millions of recreational boaters, our brave men and women are always there and ready to serve. After 50 years of dedicated service, the Canadian Coast Guard is truly a symbol of sovereignty, safety and security.
“It is accurate to say ‘50 years and counting.’ Our government is working to ensure a bright future for a modern Canadian Coast Guard by providing the vessels, tools and training needed to keep Canada’s waters safe and secure.
“The Government of Canada has provided close to $1.4 billion since 2005 for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet, including critical investments for new “Hero Class” mid-shore patrol vessels.
“As part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, the Canadian Coast Guard will also acquire three new offshore fisheries science vessels, one new oceanographic science vessel and a new polar icebreaker – CCGS John G. Diefenbaker.
“Over the past two years the Harper government has also made important upgrades to Coast Guard infrastructure. Under the government’s Economic Action Plan, Coast Guard acquired 98 new small craft, boats and environmental response barges, and undertook major repair work on 40 vessels, all of which are now in service.
“I look forward to celebrating the Golden Jubilee with all Canadians this year and thanking the members of the Coast Guard for the dedication and courage they bring to their work every day. Events and activities are planned across the country. I encourage everyone to learn more about the Canadian Coast Guard and join the celebrations near you.”
