Wallaceburg, Ontario – Local photographer Brent Foster will be taking his talents overseas this June and July to teach multimedia reporting to university students and young professionals in Instanbul, Turkey.
Foster, who teaches photography classes at his own studio in Wallaceburg, was recommended for the position by the multimedia editor of the New York Times. The students, who will attend from dozens of universities from across the globe will learn from Foster as they write, blog, report, and shoot video about Istanbul’s culture, politics, people, arts, and neighbourhoods. In the end, they’ll create a web magazine and book about the experience.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” said Foster, ”It’s always great to help educate students, and I think I have a lot to offer them during what I assume will be a lot of students’ first times reporting internationally.”
Foster, who has worked with the Los Angeles Times, TIME Magaznie, Canadian Geographic, and the New York Times, to name a few, will be teaching the class for ieiMedia in conjunction with San Franciso State University, Winstom-Salem State University, and Bahcesehir University.
In 2009, Foster made his first trip to Istanbul, Turkey on a project for the National Film Board of Canada called “Out my Window.” On past assignments, he’s also travelled to India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Rwanda, Congo, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Israel, and the Palestines.
The trip, both as a teacher, and as Foster states, as an ever learning professional, is one he is looking forward to, and one he knows will be filled with rewarding experiences, “Every time I teach, and work with a new group of students, I get to learn as well. Teaching internationally helps me further my experience as a photographer, and educator as well.”
