Cities across the country are battling to earn their place on the new Monopoly Canada game board.

Hasbro, the makers of Monopoly, are launching a nation-wide vote to find Canada’s 22 favourite cities that will be included on the new Monopoly Canada game board in celebration of their 75th Anniversary.

Beginning January 11, 2010 at midnight ET and running until February 7, 2010, Monopoly fans can visit www.monopolyvote.ca to cast votes for their favourite Canadian cities.

65 great Canadian cities have been pre-selected for the top 20 city vote and Chatham-Kent is one of them. Canadians are invited to cast their ballots for their three favourite cities each day of the vote. You must visit the website, create a profile, and login each day to vote. You are only allowed to vote once per day during the contest period.

The city that receives the most votes will be placed on the highest rent property traditionally held by Boardwalk.

The 20 cities that receive the most votes will be part of Monopoly history as the first cities selected to be on the Canadian game board through a consumer vote. However, two spaces on the board will be reserved for cities that are nominated through a wild card vote, which means that any Canadian city can be nominated for these two final spaces.

Through your profile on www.monopolyvote.ca you can nominate a city once a day to be part of the wild card vote. Note that you cannot nominate one of the existing 65 pre-selected cities. Once the top 20 city vote is complete, the top ten wild card cities will then be put to a vote and the winning two cities will occupy the low-rent property spaces traditionally held by Mediterranean Avenue and Baltic Avenue.

The wild card vote will take place from February 8, 2010 until February 21, 2010.

For 75 years the official Monopoly board has represented the most elite locations in individual cities. With the successful launches of both the Monopoly Here & Now: Electronic Banking Edition and Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition, Canadians were able to showcase their passion for Monopoly. With this new edition, Canadian consumers will now have an opportunity to vote for their favourite city to appear on the final game board for a Monopoly edition to truly call their own.

The cities voted onto the final game board will be announced in June 2010.

The new Monopoly Canada Edition will be launched on Canada Day, July 1, 2010 and available in stores prior to launch.

So the residents of Chatham-Kent can vote for their community starting January 11… and every day until February 7.

Yeah that IS funny! But this is no joke and I think it is an opportunity to do a little mouse clicking to help our community get some recognition. When we do make it to the Monopoly board it will no doubt create more tourism because of the people who will be curious to see the real Chatham-Kent. Click away Chatham-Kent and help us get on that board!

Unfortunately tho, this reminds me of an important lesson I learned in marketing class in university…..”Nothing kills a bad product faster than advertising it!” If Chatham was made to be a much better, more attractive place to be, with exciting things to do….then advertising would bring very positive results. Bringing national awareness to CK in its current state is likely to only bring negative results and make us the butt of national jokes rather than just local and provincial ones. Think about that for a minute…first the game creates national awareness…people check us out on the map, on websites, in the news…..then they realize there are no jobs here, very little to do for entertainment, heart disease capital of canada…..yeah, thats not the way to attract people to visit, move or live here!! Efforts and resources need to be prioritized much better than they have been in the past to make this place better first….THEN advertise it!!

HI DL , if everyone thought the way that you do and academia does we would all continue to sit around and wait for life to happen. From my experience what is taught in the classroom and what actually occurs in the real world is quite different. In the least, shifting our perception of Chatham Kent and focusing on the positives that it has to offer, is a proactive move.

Realism is good. I hope we do get on the board and that motivates people to make changes for the better that we all benefit from. Glad to hear that you are voting!

I have to disagree with DL. I believe it is a great time to put the spotlight on C-K. There are many more great things here than people think. I have had friends move here from Hamilton, Sudbury, Northbay, Toronto, Michigan, and London. They all came for a visit and fell in love with our strong rural heritage and the areas location. There are very few places in Canada where you can have great farm land, warm climate, affordable housing, and close location to so many great parks and water front vistas. Chatham-Kent will be a strong economic engine in the future. People need to learn about the new type of business opportunities out there. I started a new company in 2007 and we have just had our best year ever. If you have a poor attitude about C-K you are not part of the solution.I have put my vote in everyday for our spot on the game. I would love it if we win. I encourage all those who think we have nothing to offer to go out for the week end and have a great look around.

Chatham-Kent was in third place when I voted today – which is very exciting. This is a wonderful place to live, work and play. It is a yet to be discovered gem and if the Monopoly games helps raise national awareness of our wonderful geographic and human assets then all the better.
