Mike “Pinball” Clemons, the former CFL star and current vice chair of the Toronto Argonauts, carried the Torch for one of the legs on the North Buxton stop.

“This is just absolutely amazing,” Clemons said. “I can’t put into words what this means to me and what this would mean to my Mom if she were here today.”

To start his leg of the relay, Clemons began running backwards – in order to honour the slaves who first settled in Buxton and in Canada.

“There’s a little bit of symbolism there,” he said.

Clemons said he is very proud to that the Olympic Games are coming to Vancouver, adding that he is inspired by all the athletes that take part.

“Sports is such a huge part of who we are… and it can be so inspirational,” he said. “I am just so happy to play a small part… this is really about those who came before us and our athletes who inspired us.
