Cultural Ramblings – By Glen Turner
Well, it seems that the dust has settled.
Go and see what’s going on behind the Capitol Theatre these days, and it’s construction, construction, construction.
Full speed ahead seems to be the prevailing mode, and… more power to them, in my opinion.
Several years ago, I attended a meeting, one of three in this Municipality, at which two gentlemen, one from Stratford, and one from St. Mary’s, spoke to local citizens about pride.
Local pride. Community pride. Civic pride.
They talked about what those towns have accomplished, and we all know exactly what they’ve accomplished.
But their message then still resounds in my mind.
They told local people that we had to learn from the experiences of other communities.
They used their own experiences in their communities as examples of what could (and should) happen here.
The title of one of the presentations was “Learning from other communities who have bet on themselves and won!”
That said a lot.
In the early 50’s, some people with a vision established the Stratford Festival, in a tent, would you believe. It’s true.
Now look at Stratford.
Well, it’s taken a long time, but the local vision is still here.
Now, after all the bickering, it’s going ahead full blast.
I can’t wait for the opening.
