Brian Pugh, head coach for the Blenheim Bobcats senior football team, was elated after his teams 10-9 win over the Wallaceburg Tartans of Saturday, Nov. 7 in Blenheim.

Pugh told the Chatham-Kent Daily Post on the field after the game that he was very proud of his players.

“These guys have done the same thing all year, we won five or six one point games,” he said. “They just come to play… they don’t give up, they don’t quit on their teammates. I’m so proud of these guys. It’s just a nice, rewarding end to the season for them…they deserve it.”

Pugh said the Tartans were a tough competitor in the final game.

“Rob MacLachlan is the best coach in this league,” Pugh said. “I hate playing against him… but it was nice to sneak one by him today. He’s got a great group of kids there.”

The Tartans coach commended the Bobcats after the game as well, saying that the Blenheim squad carried the the momentum of the game throughout.

“We were lucky to be up 8-3 at the half,” MacLachlan said. “They beat us at the line of scrimmage and controlled the play. It was a one point game in the end… but their young line beat us up front.”

Blenheim quarterback Ryan Vanderzwan caught up with the Daily Post following the game, and described his TD pass to Zack Shuian at the start of the fourth quarter – which proved to be the difference at the end.

“(Zack) said he was open on the play before… so we ran the same play, and he did the rest,” Vanderzwan said.

Blenheim linebacker Matt Price said the Bobcats have been working for five years for the chance to hoist the championship trophy.

“We’ve worked so hard for this for so long,” Price said. “We been waiting five years for this.”
