Liberal candidacy still open in Lambton-Kent Middlesex, two in the running so far

By Aaron Hall – Daily Post Editor

A void still remains in Lambton-Kent Middlesex for the candidacy for the Federal Liberal Party.

Riding President Mike Ferguson told the Chatham-Kent Daily Post that no date has been scheduled for a nomination meeting, yet two potential candidates are currently set to run.

“As riding president, I prefer to wait and see what happens in Ottawa first,” Ferguson said. “Currently however, we have two people running for the nomination… Mr. Emery Huszka of Florence, a Councillor on Dawn-Euphemia Township and Mr. Ken Filson, Councillor in Middlesex Centre, and account manager with Libro.”

Former candidate Jeff Wesley told the Daily Post that he will not be running during this election, instead he will keep focusing his attention on the hospital situation at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Sydenham Campus.

“I have said I am not running in this election as my focus is on the hospital and I will stick with this issue to see it through to the end,” Wesley said. “I will not leave the hospital issue for my own political goals. It would hurt the hospital issue immensely if I left to run in part because many would think what I was doing for it was all politics… well I am sticking to what I said, as I said all along.”

Wesley added that he believes the money spent on an election could be better utilized elsewhere.

“As far as an election… I see no need for one and the $350 million cost could be much better spent,” he said. “Such as in job creation, EI and local health care.”

Wesley, the current chair of the Save Our Sydenham Committee, lost to current LKM MP Bev Shipley, a Conservative, in last years election.

Michael Ignatieff, the leader of the Liberal Party, announced yesterday (Sept. 1) that his party will enter a non-confidence motion at its earliest opportunity, and is expected in early October.

Congratulations to Jeff Wesley on the integrity of his commitment to his community…Steve Pickard should really be taking notes. It’s clear his campaign for the Liberal party nomination began a few years ago….at our expense.

I feel there is no need for an election at this time and the three hundred million plus we would save go into the struggling hospitals to keep them going. Mr Ignatief and the Liberals are on a power trip as we would be no further ahead if they got in.

“Van Kesteren making two ‘major’ funding announcements today”

Just for the record, who is really starting their campaign “at our expense.”

The Liberals never suggested they wanted an election. The Liberals indicated they would become the official opposition party again and oppose the coalition. The Liberals will keep the government on their toes and hopefully make them THINK before they do anything further.
