By Mike Hummelen – John McGregor
John McGregor math students put their engineering skills to the test on Thursday, April 9 when Andrea Woon-Fat of the University of Guelph made a guest appearance at the school.
Woon-Fat, the liaison officer of Guelph University, showed a brief presentation of the benefits and opportunities offered by a degree in engineering.
Students then participated in WindENG, a design session wherein the students got into groups and designed, built and tested windmill designs.
The groups then had a fan blown on their design as multimeter tested the voltage.
The group with the highest voltage won a small prize.
Woon-Fat, who has visited many schools across southern Ontario, expressed her belief in engineering to be a huge career path in the near future stating: “science and math is very important for students to open opportunities for their future.”
WindENG is a program put on by University of Guelph to create awareness of alternative and renewable energy sources such as wind generated energy.
The program put on at McGregor was a smaller version of the much larger event being held April 22 at the University of Guelph’s School of Engineering, which gathers students from across the province to test their designs.
A first place prize of $2,000 goes to the team with the best design.
